Israel’s Netanyahu Reportedly Plans Major Iran Operation as US Approval Looms
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly pushed for a new military operation against Iran, facing opposition from the IDF chief while Mossad backs the plan. The proposed action could depend on Donald Trump’s approval.
Israel and the United States are reportedly considering a direct strike against Iran’s leadership. The operation would resemble previous military campaigns but could involve new military measures that have never been undertaken before. These steps could initiate a process that might ultimately lead to the collapse of Iran’s government.
According to a report published by Israel Hayom on October 26, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had pushed for a swift military operation against Iran but encountered opposition from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir. Mossad Director Roman Gofman, however, supported the proposed operation.
Citing sources, the report said the operation could trigger a resumption of the Iran-Israel war. However, the decision not to launch it immediately is reportedly linked to operational considerations rather than Israel’s elections.
Israel is scheduled to vote for a new prime minister on Tuesday. Last week, opposition leaders accused Netanyahu of attempting to launch an attack on Iran to influence the election results.
Any major operation involving Israel’s security agencies requires a meeting of the Committee of the Heads of the Security Agencies, known in Hebrew as VARASH. The committee includes the heads of the Shin Bet security agency, Mossad and the Israel Defense Forces.
Israel Awaits Trump’s Approval for Proposed Iran Operation
Israel Hayom reported that the proposed operation would not involve the resumption of a large-scale military offensive. An attack of that magnitude would require full coordination between Israel and the United States and would depend on a decision by US President Donald Trump.
Israeli officials reportedly believe that an attack has become inevitable because Iran is moving towards developing a nuclear bomb. The key question, however, remains when such an operation might take place and what decision the United States will make.
The reported differences within Israel’s security establishment, alongside the requirement for coordination with Washington, could determine the timing and scale of any future military action against Iran. The proposed operation remains a reported plan, with its launch dependent on operational considerations and the decisions of the Israeli and US leadership.
